Your Business Is Stuck. Here Is How to Tell If It's Sales or Marketing

This article is the written working of a video — watch it on YouTube.

Your business is stuck. Either nobody is coming in, or they come in and nothing gets sold.

Before you spend another rupee on ads, or another week worrying about it, you need to know which of those two things is actually broken - sales, or marketing. Most owners never ask the question, and the two mistakes that follow are expensive in opposite directions.

The test

It takes one question.

How many people came to understand what you sell this week - not bought, just asked?

If the answer is nobody, you do not have a sales problem. Nobody has been in front of you to sell to. That is a marketing problem, and no amount of a better closing line will touch it.

If people did come, did ask, and left without buying - you do not have a marketing problem. The people found you. Something in the conversation lost them. That is a sales problem, and buying more ads only pours more people into a room where nothing gets sold.

That is the whole diagnosis, and most owners get it backwards. Someone with a marketing problem goes hunting for a better closing line. Someone with a sales problem goes and buys more ads.

What sales actually is

Someone is standing in front of you. They could buy. They need what you have. Sales is your ability to get that person to buy - properly, legally, without tricking anybody. It is a skill, human to human, and it can be learned.

I know that because of how I learned it. I did my personal training course alongside a group of friends. I came first in one exam and second in the next - the person above me was three marks ahead. Our numbers were almost identical. We nearly all passed, and we nearly all went on to work in the same big gym - same building, same exposure to people walking in.

Three months later I had five, six, seven, sometimes ten clients. They had noticeably fewer.

The exposure was identical. What was different is that I had already learned to sell - first sitting in my parents' kirana shop from around class two, then their fruit shop in Tikapur, selling apples and oranges after school. Later from one Brian Tracy book I read six times, non-stop. Up at four in the morning, reading until six, a boiled egg, then the bike out to a seven o'clock PT session in Battisputali with the audiobook running the whole ride. I worked four years as a personal trainer, and that is where the difference actually showed up.

"You were lucky - your parents were traders"

Sometimes that is true. But clients come to me who had never sold anything in their lives - people who got angry the first time somebody told them no - and after training they sell extremely well.

If you believe you cannot sell, that is a belief. It is not a fact.

"I am an introvert"

Selling is the introvert's game. To sell, you have to listen and actually understand the person in front of you. The extrovert talks, and talks, and does not listen - he is the one with work still to do. Speaking, he already knows how to do.

What marketing actually is

Marketing is getting in front of people.

If I had stayed home instead of going to that gym, I would have had no clients - not because I could not sell, but because nobody was ever in front of me to sell to. Getting in front of your customer and letting them know what you do: that is marketing.

It has levels, and the levels are levels of leverage:

And it has exactly one job: get in front of the person who could buy, make them understand what you sell, and get their hand raised.

Marketing itself can be aimed at different things too - some of it is built to find the people who might want to buy (lead generation), some of it is built to sell directly (a billboard with a price on it), and some of it is built to sell a free consultation instead of the product itself. Different tools, same underlying job.

The part most people miss

Sales and marketing are not two separate departments.

If your marketing is good enough, the marketing does the selling. Tesla sells cars online. My own clients buy after watching my videos, before we have really spoken.

The catch is that you cannot build marketing that good until you understand how to sell in the first place. Sales is the foundation. Marketing is the advanced level.

And there is a third answer nobody wants

Sometimes it is neither.

You do not give the business your time. You do not market. Somebody calls and you do not pick up, because it is Saturday. The shop shuts at seven and does not open before nine. That is not a sales problem and it is not a marketing problem - that is not trying to sell.

So which one is it?

Run the test on your own business this week. Count how many people asked. If the answer is close to zero, go fix your marketing before you touch your pitch. If people are asking and walking away, go fix how you sell before you spend another rupee getting more of them in the door.

Tell me in the comments which one is broken in your business - I read them.
